Preschools

 

There are five preschools in Fjarðabyggð, one located in each town and all carrying on fine, progressive work. There have never been waiting lists at the Fjarðabyggð preschools, and they have been open to children from the age of 12 to 18 months. The priority of enabling local preschools to meet increased demand has been fulfilled by building additions.  All of the preschools have now moved into long-term premises except in Norðfjörður, where preparations for building a new preschool are however underway.  The Fjarðabyggð preschools are the following:

Compulsory schools

 
 

Fjarðabyggð's compulsory schools have splendid facilities, along with offering a modern, progressive education.  The municipal libraries and music schools are housed in the compulsory schools.  The intent is to strengthen library services and coordinate the work conducted by compulsory schools and music schools.  In Iceland, school is obligatory for children aged 6 to 16. The academic year lasts from the end of August through the beginning of June.   The compulsory schools in Fjarðabyggð are:

Music schools and Libraries

Music schools and Libraries are operated in all the population centres in Fjarðabyggð and are located at the compulsory schools.

 

Secondary education

 

The vocational school in Norðfjörður (Verkmenntaskóli Austurlands, www.va.is) offers a diverse curriculum in industrial trades, work-related studies, and an upper-secondary degree programme. It is also common for residents of Fjarðabyggð to study at the secondary school in nearby Egilsstaðir (Menntaskólinn á Egilsstöðum, www.me.is).  

The East Iceland Knowledge Network (Þekkingarnet Austurlands, www.fna.is) offers a variety of services for residents, businesses and other bodies in East Iceland; examples of such services include local university studies, upper-secondary education for adults, educational counselling and assorted independent courses.  Teleconferencing equipment for educational purposes is available in Reyðarfjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður and Norðfjörður.
